Climb Aboard the Medical Spa Movement
It's not a question of when, it's how? What does it take to operate a successful medical spa; what do consumers want, what does the law require, and how will that affect your building and program design? Industry leaders Catherine Atzen, John Buckingham, Michael Effler, Eric Light, Tom Porter and Sheri Sallenbach will share their knowledge and answer many of your questions.

How will your decisions effect the type of insurance and financing you can get? Whether you are a day spa owner or a licensed health care professional, you need to be aware of the regulations and guidelines that impact your success.

Logical science or marketing hype? An overview of ingredient categories and offer a sobering perspective of “natural”, “synthetic”, “organic” and “chemical-free”. Total Oxidation Management , the theme of Tom's book, “You're not Aging, You're Just Oxidizing”.

Look beyond a menu of services to a new way to drive business growth. Instead of a list of services, developing programs of care that improve patient outcomes is the best way to guarantee repeat clientele – the best way to generate substantial income and is key to successfully integrating medicine and spa.

Medical Spa Web Track
Leveraging Internet services
By Robert C. Silkey - CEO of Einstein Medical featured in Cosmetic Surgery Times
Purchasing a Web site is only the first step toward Internet marketing success, which can dramatically affect a practice's efficiency and potentially save thousands of dollars. To support a Web site, a number of services are necessary. Deciding which company's technology is compatible with the specific needs of an individual practice is difficult when doctors must sift through a sea of offerings from local design firms, freelance Web designers, advertising agencies and Internet marketing firms that specialize in medicine. And for every existing type of Web site development service, thousands of companies are vying for the business — some of them lacking in scruples. Should you decide to go it alone, it is important to know just what you're getting into.

Medical Spa Esthetics Track One-Stop Healing Shop
ParaMedical Skin Care and the “MediClinical” Spa Concept
Provided by
Lyn Ross, LME
of Institut' DERMed
Consumers should not be afraid to make an appointment at a “MediClinical” spa because of complex words like esthetics , paramedical , and cosmeceutical . These words have one mission in common: consumer relaxation with results. Today's MediClinical spa concept is the millennium's answer to a “one-stop healing shop.”
The American spa industry has grown exponentially in the last two decades and thankfully so. Proudly, I can say I was an esthetician in the mid-1980s when skin care was just taking off in the United States , before licensing was available and when the European facial “invasion” was just beginning to take hold. Ladies were coming in to relax and enjoy treatments that offered them pampering and a topic for conversation.
Approximately 15 to 20 years ago, when the word “paramedical” first surfaced in the trade publications, I was part of a select group of estheticians who became intrigued and wanted to learn how to practice this emerging type of esthetics. I wanted to provide something more substantial and scientific to improve the conditions I was seeing in my treatment room. I set out on a mission to educate myself on this “paramedical skin care” I was reading about. I went as far east and west as I could go to get this education, and at that time, there was just not much out there.

Medical Spa TrendsThe International Dental Spa Association reports an initial count of "Dental Spas"
Pacific Palisades, CA (PRWEB) April 26, 2006 -- The International Dental Spa Association (www.internationaldentalspaassociation.org and www.dentalspaassociation.com) has released a first of its kind study revealing an initial count of the number of dental spas across the United States. The study revealed between 125 to 200 dental spas exist across the nation. These numbers parallel estimates by the International Medical Spa Association.
Dr. Lynn Watanabe, IDSA founder, cautioned these numbers depend largely on how they operate as dental spas. She stated, "We are now seeing an increase in the number of dental practices either identifying themselves as dental spas or associating themselves with providing spa dentistry." Dr. Watanabe released these numbers at a lecture presentation on dental spas at the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry on April 14, 2006.

Hannelore appeared on CBS Channel 3 - Philadelphia's Evening show in February to speak on the dangers of laser usage.

CBS Morning Show
CBS flew me to New York to speak about laser safety. It seems their consumer reporter went to 10 different spas - some of them medical and some of them not - and got about 10 different stories on laser usage. 3 told her that "accutane wasn't a problem". One facility told her that "lasers can't burn you". Another said there was "no difference between laser and IPL treatments".
CBS Marketwatch
Ms. Leavy's taped appearance on CBS's Marketwatch talks about the increase in cosmetic medical procedures being performed in spas and the importance of having any procedure done or supervised by a doctor. Legislation is currently being reviewed in many states on this subject and we need YOU, our members, to pull together to make sure that the future of our industry moves in the right direction.

New Grant Named in Honor of the IMSA
We received this honor from the Melanoma Research Foundation
Thank you, Bill Marsch!
The Melanoma Research Foundation Board has approved all named grants for 2006. As you might know, our priority goal is to attract young scientists to the field of melanoma research and have established our two-year, $100,000 junior investigator grants to do just that. This year we will award five first-year grants and three second-year renewal grants. Our total grant commitment to melanoma research grants this year, our 10th anniversary, will be $850,000. It is my pleasure to notify you and your associates that one of our new junior investigator grants will be named in part in honor of the Day Spa and International Medical Spa Associations. This first-year grant will be awarded to Dr. Mary Jo Turk of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth College. Dr. Turk's research is titled "Generating and Maintaining Post-Excisional Immunity against Poorly-Immunogenic Melanoma." A layman's write up on his two-year, $100,000 research grant will be in our Winter newsletter. This grant will be called "Award in Honor of Allured Publishing, Steve Czaben, Bill Gaudelli, Erik Hartzell, Char Kurant, Cindy Lanman, Day Spa & International Medical Spa Association, Jennifer Mitchell, Rodney Robinson and the 2005 Wings of Hope Recipients: Dr. Garo Armen, Carole Frost-Kelley, Mindy Gorman and Dr. John M. Kirkwood." Hannelore, we are all proud and grateful for what you and your associates are doing to help us raise money for melanoma research and are delighted to recognize your support with this grant. I continue to send to you and your associates our best wishes and thanks.

Regulations/AlertMedical spas face costly state mandate
The article below appeared on MSNBC.com and has been a hot issue in the medical spa community. Visit the IMSA website for updates on Legislative Issues that our network confronts and how we can pull together to face them.
California Bill: SB1423
John Buckingham - Solana MedSpas There is TREMENDOUS opposition to this SB 1423. We have an entire legal, regulatory and Sacramento lobbying team which has been working with Senator Figueroa's office, the CMA, the PA Association and all nurse and MD associations in the state since the bill's inception. We have already had it modified even before it has hit the Assembly floor even before it has hit the Health and Business Committee of the Assembly.
Cheryl Whitman - Beautiful Forever Medical Spa Consultants
5/15/06 Robin Hartley was contacted and stated that SB1423 was not considered by the Appropriations Committee of the Senate today, but will be deferred until 5/22/06.
5/16/06 Have been involved in drafting the revisions in an amended version of SB1423 with Bryce Dockerty, lobbyist for the California Association of Physician Assistants (CAPA). This revised draft has been reviewed and approved by the CAPA Board for circulation to the CMA Executive Board and other associations.
This amendment as proposed includes a requirement for an increased scope of physician oversight for aesthetic practices; however, deletes the requirement for “on-site MD supervisions”. A new section was added which will require specific training of any licensed providers and documentation of competence.
Similar bills are being introduced in New York, Massachusetts and Indiana. Please keep the IMSA office informed if you hear any similar changes in the law in your state.
The IMSA Board Meeting on June 4th which will take place in Las Vegas will address those new legislature being introduced in many states and how most effectively we can address those with the help of our members and other medical spa partners.
