Critical Success Factors for a Medical Spa

What makes a medical spa tick or better yet, profitable and successful?

Several factors and traits go into a successful and profitable medical spa including, but not limited to, capital adequacy, marketing, medical supervision, staff, menu of services, technology, training and differentiation.

Capital Adequacy – Most start-ups fail, primarily because they are under-capitalized.  A medical spa needs sufficient capital in order to be able to afford investment in technology, space, staff, training, marketing and operations.  Medical spas need to budget at least six months to a year of fixed costs in order to survive until they attain profitability.  Even during profitable times, it is wise to maintain a cash cushion for seasonal and economic slowdowns.

I was having breakfast at a local restaurant the other day when I noticed on the table there was a bottle of hot sauce with the restaurant's name on it. I was impressed because I knew this was no chain - it is just a small independent restaurant who was taking advantage of private labeling. It is one of a growing number of small restaurants that enhance their brand by putting their own name on products

First, let's be clear about what I mean by Private Labeling. According to Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, private label products or services are typically those manufactured or provided by one company for offer under another company's brand. So this covers everything from Wal-Mart brand products to the small restaurant putting their label on someone else's hot sauce.

Regulations/AlertGeorgia Legislative Issue


Members of the IMSA were alerted to this legislation about to pass. As an association we must stand together to see that our industry is open to growth.

A group of self-appointed dermatologists and plastic surgeons in Georgia are orchestrating a manipulative “Capture Theory,” in an attempt to economically monopolize the anti- aging market. This Bill goes into hearing on December 8th, and we must oppose it. If not, it will put independent non- physician spa laser cosmetic owners out of business in Georgia.

Massage TAX – NJ

This summer legislation for a new massage tax was passed in New Jersey. Legislative Chairperson for the Day Spa Association, Rosemary Weiner. Worked tirelessly to try and gather association members signatures for a petition against the bill.
