As we are celebrating Labor Day this weekend, the summer is now officially over. I hope everyone enjoyed this warm and friendly season, although here in the Northeast it was a cool and wet one!

If you have not yet completed the DSA's First Annual Compensation & Benefits Survey there is still time – deadline Monday, September 6th. Our thanks go to Janet D’Angelo, Chairperson of our DSA Survey & Research Committee and her committee members Stella Sigfus, Rosemarie Weiner, Kyle Simonson and Hannelore Leavy. They have done an outstanding job. We need your help in spreading the word about this survey we are conducting. Thank you to those DSA members and other industry friends who so far have assisted us in getting as many day spas to come to our site to help us collect the data needed for this important study.

The Day Spa & Medical Spa Directory 2005
We are finalizing this annual publication. Being listed in this Directory is part of your membership benefits.
The December issue of Spa Management Journal will be OUR DIRECTORY. Thank you Guy Jonkman!

There is still time to consider advertising in this widely distributed and anxiously awaiting publication, which serves both, the consumers to find a day spa while at home or on the road and for the trade to find equipment, products and services - providers to find spas to offer their services to. Print run will be 37,000 copies. If you have not yet sent in your updates, symbol and bold listings, you need to do this NOW. Please contact Annabellas@dayspaassociation.com

Television Opportunity - you must sign up before September 30th
“The Beauty Show” a “feature magazine TV show”, think “Extra” meets the “Travel Channel” that blends current news and information in the spa, beauty, fitness, and fashion industries, will be producing a new feature called “The Best Day Spas" – within cities throughout the U.S. The new segment, supported by the Day Spa Association with member spas having the opportunity to be featured, will cover news on the latest treatment and trends and the personalities and innovators behind the scenes.
“The Beauty Show” is currently seen on In-flight Airline Programming worldwide and soon to be syndicated on cable stations with 28 million available households.
“The Best Day Spa” segment is designed to support the Spa industry through the Show’s VIP Passport Membership, which viewers sign up for to receive a special VIP package from Affiliate Day Spa partners.
For a limited time, “The Beauty Show” will choose only Day Spas, which are members of The Day Spa Association for the special news features during the up-coming thirteen show series. The Day Spa Association, as a sponsor, has negotiated that the very high costs and limited airtime for the news segments will be waived for their spa members. DSA members only need to cover the ancillary marketing fees, (approximately $995 - $2750), which includes your web site being linked on The Beauty Show’s web site, celebrity promotions nationwide, the production of the VIP Passport Membership books, and cross marketing with W Magazine, Elle Magazine and more. Product companies within the spas are encouraged to help take part in the marketing costs, making it an affordable participation to DSA spa members.

To take advantage of this wonderful opportunity, e-mail: beautytv@aol.com or call: 877-251-4300 ext: 3 – deadline September 30th!

Here is a new term I found by Healing News by Laurel W. House
(in case you missed it in Healing Retreats & Spas)

"Anger-orbic"
Do false accusations, freeway accidents, and friendly reminders to pay your bills make your temper terse? We are all akin to bad days, however, regularly erupting into an all-out rage is a condition that may need adjusting. Exercise is one way to blow off steam, but have you tried anger-obics? According to anger-management specialists, you can actually fetter a frenetic fury with several simple anger-obic techniques - no leotard or leg warmers required:
  • First you need to warm up.
Determine where your anger resides. This is the easy part. Just examine your body's language. Are your shoulders pressed up to your ears? Is your jaw clenched? Focus on those parts, breathe into them, and visualize them relaxing as your anger is freed.
  • Try a little improvisational dance.
Grab a scraf. That will be the embodiment of your anger. Holding it with your non-dominent hand, dance around with it. Notice how it moves. Does it swirl around or tangle between your legs? As you continue to dance, are its movements calming down?
  • Try posing.
In yoga, the spiritual warrior represents a soldier that does not fight, but instead inspires harmony. Stand in Sprititual Warrior Pose and behold the potency of peace.
  • Stomp on it.
The mind is a very powerful thing. Write your strife on a post-it and affix it to the bottom of your shoe. Go out for a long run. Each time that foot hits the pavement, your problem's power is fading. Once you return home, you won't even be able to discern it. Once you complete your anger-obics routine, the root of your rage will be but a speck on your shoe. Smile, laugh, and you will find yourself happier.

  • Move your body to modify your mind!

As always, if you have any questions, or if we can be of assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Healthfully,

Hannelore R. Leavy
Executive Director
